The Top 10 (Plus 1): #6 - Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam
It's been some time since we've ventured into the Top 10 (Plus 1) series, but we are back today with #6 on our list: Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam.
Everything I need to say about Davy, I've already written. So the next bit is a series of pieces I wrote over at my other blogs, and after, I'll wrap up with a bit on the band.
#1 - My roommate runs into my room and tells me to turn on Jimmy Kimmel immediately, he was randomly watching. We proceed to see a little white kid from Isle of Man, England singing in a deep black man's blues voice and shredding a guitar in every perfect way possible. This led to a night of Youtube searches on him and the band. I was immediately hooked. So, I email my dad right away since he is a blues nut and tell him to check it out. He is immediately hooked. He emails his friends that are blues fans and they are immediately hooked. So, I'm thinking, if all these people love them, what about people who aren't blues fans. And I go off and tell some of them, and they love it. And now I'm thinking to myself, Back Door Slam is going to be huge. If it's not them, then it's going to be Davy Knowles, because the kid is absolutely amazing. Just tremendous. Their website's opening page has various quotes from critics who have seen them. Some of the quotes are, "I heard the spirit of Jimi Hendrix...it was a group called Back Door Slam." Or, "A guitar god in training." Other people have recognized, now it's time for the rest of the world to do so.
So, in tradition with tonight's post. Here's the kid shredding a couple great covers, and the last one is his own.
"Red House"
"Almost Cut My Hair"
"Come Home"
#2 - Now on the flip side of this, I recently met one of my favorite artists, Davy Knowles. Knowles was gracious enough to talk to us, and even go as far as get my younger brother into a bar to see his band (the outdoor show was cancelled after our 3 hour drive), and even talk guitar with him after the show. It was truly unbelievable. He is a genuinely nice guy, and he plays great music. So, the result of this interaction was Davy becoming one of my TOP musicians. I love his tunes, and he is a great person. So he moves up.
#3 - So, world, try to check out Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam. He's a young bluesman who has been compared to everyone from Clapton to Hendrix to Rory Gallagher. He is a tremendous guitarist who just released his 2nd album, Coming Up for Air. The album is currently coming in at #8 on the Billboard Blues charts, and it peaked at #2. I've personally seen him 3 times live, and only a few weeks ago, he graciously allowed my brother and I to join him in bringing equipment in so my brother could get into a bar. He's a great young kid with a tremendous future and even better guitar work.
Three bits focused entirely on Davy. Yeah, he's that good. I've seen him live 4 times, 3 of which I was 3 feet from him, and once where he graciously allowed my underage brother to see him in a bar (due to outdoor issues, just read above). He's released two albums, Roll Away and Coming up for Air and is known for his phenomenal live shows. So, give him a shot. I've never found anyone disappointed when they see the greatest living guitarist in action.
Come back next week for another guitar virtuoso at #5.

2010 Olympic Moments

Well, the 2010 Winter Olympics have ended and boy, we were served quite a treat. Whether it was lightning fast short-track speedskating races, agonizing cross-country skiing races or high-flying snowboarding tricks, Vancouver had a lot to offer. Without any further ado, I give you my top 5 moments of the Vancouver Games.
My Top 5 2010 Olympic Moments
5. Bode Miller's Gold Medal Run: The self-proclaimed former drunk came through huge for the Americans, giving them their first gold in the Super Combined in something like 1 million years.
4. New Events!: SnowCross and SkiCross made their debuts and were exceptionally fun to watch. You can't go wrong with 4 people racing down a mountain, flying over ramps, taking turns at high speeds and dodging other boarders. Great work on those additions.
3. Shaun White and his Double McDeezy (or whatever it was called): The Flying Tomato gave us great theater early on in the Olympics with his in-air tricks. And how about that victory lap? That has to rank up there for the greats of all time.
2. U.S./Canada 1st Round Hockey Match: This gave the Americans hope, and they took advantage of every bit of it. Silencing the die-hard Canadian crowd gives them extra points, too.
1. U.S./Canada Hockey Gold Medal Game: Yeah, we lost, but wow, it wasn't without a fight. Zach Parise's game tying goal with star goalie Ryan Miller on the bench pushed the epic battle in to overtime where, well, you know what happened next. The best hockey game of the tournament on its biggest stage will hopefully bring more fans to the resurgent game that is hockey.

After Work Fun
What is your favorite thing to do when you get home after work?
For some, just eating a hot, delicious dinner with their family is as good as it gets. Others love attending children's sporting events and music recitals. Even more love going out and having fun with friends.
Whatever it is, remember that each day is a gift. Make the most of it.

Save on Your Auto Insurance
How can you save the most money on your Indiana auto insurance? Well, we are glad you asked, because we have loads of answers for you.
To find the best discounts around, you have to know what to look for. Here are some of those things:
To find the best discounts around, you have to know what to look for. Here are some of those things:
- Deductibles: A $500 Collision or Comp deductible costs more than a $1000 one. If you want to take the risk, your rate will decrease.
- Group Discounts: Make sure your entire family is under one policy. Everyone will save.
- Multi-Policy Discounts: Put your home and auto under one insurance carrier and reap the benefits. Some companies offer up to 30% savings!
- Daily Miles: If you drive less than 10 miles to work, you may be able to save big on your insurance policy.
- Assigned Drivers: Make sure that your most expensive cars are assigned to your household's best drivers. For instance, if your kids are on your policy, make sure they are assigned to the least expensive cars.
- Children Away from Home: Have students away at college? Great. Simply let your agent know and you will be eligible for discounts.
- Protection Devices: If you have anti-theft devices, or even airbags, you can be eligible to save up to 5% on your policy.

The Value of Insurance
When one thinks of the important things in their life, similar answers usually always come up first. Friends, family, their job, their home, etc. One thing we always tend to leave off that list is insurance.
Insurance gives us a safety net should anything go wrong. Car accident? With insurance, you are covered. House fire? You can rebuild. Death in the family? While insurance can't bring the soul back, compensation will be given to you.
Now while these personal items (or in some worse cases, people) won't be returned to you, insurance can bring back shreds of value back in your life. Even in these tragedies, some compensation for your losses is better than nothing. We just hope you never have to face some of these tragedies.
Insure yourself today with Indianapolis auto insurance, Merrillville home insurance, Schererville business insurance, Crown Point life insurance and many more options by visiting Bekan Insurance Group online or calling toll-free 800.894.8225.

Groundhog Day
Groundhog Day is a landmark moment for weatherman around the country. Call it a joke, but six more weeks of winter is something I just don't want to see.
Fortunately, some geniuses turned this day into a movie of the same name. Bill Murray plays meteorologist Phil Connors who repeats the same day. Over and over and over again.
It's worth seeing, so if you haven't go check it out.

The Top 10 (Plus 1): #7 - Wilco
Let me say something first before I introduce the #7 band on my all-time favorite list. I missed out on the first half of Wilco's career, then struggled to get acquainted in the next quarter of it, and finally in the last few years have now realized how important they are. What can I say? Sometimes great things take awhile to hit you.
Wilco and I have a lot of great things in common (well, kinda. It's really a stretch, but go with me on this anyway.). We both are rooted in alternative-roots type music. Of course, Wilco's lead singer, Jeff Tweedy, started his career in the alt-country band Uncle Tupelo before starting one of the most influential bands of the '00s. Both of us had our underrated moment in the sun. Wilco's being the 2002 album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, mine being, let's be honest no one really cares. Finally, Wilco hails from the almighty city of Chicago (and I live in the suburbs). Oh well, the comparisons are close enough.
As previously stated, Wilco's first album, AM, came in the wake of the Uncle Tupelo breakup in 1995. Tweedy and the boys launched in the same direction as Uncle Tupelo, but over time they would move on into a more diverse musical nature. Wilco followed up AM with Being There, another critically acclaimed, but not much heard album. However, it did produce the song "Outtasite (Outta Mind)," which made a serious impact on my life. In 1999, Summerteeth was released with songs like "Via Chicago," "Can't Stand It," and "I'm Always in Love." The album peaked at #78 on the Billboard 200, which put it a step below their previous album. Still, Wilco was moving forward into more listeners ears.
Wilco's biggest leap was with their 2002 release, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, in which they released the album without any backing. Eventually, they were signed on by Nonesuch Records, and they would not look back. Named one of the top albums of the decade by nearly every source available, YHF sold over 500,000 albums and hit #13 on the Billboard 200 - a tremendous success by any accounts. Songs like "Heavy Metal Drummer," "War on War," "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," "Ashes of American Flags," and "Jesus, Etc." (among many, many others...the whole album is great) make YHF my favorite Wilco album, narrowly edging out their 2007 release Sky Blue Sky.
In between those two albums was A Ghost is Born, which won 2 Grammys and included "Handshake Drugs" and "Theologians." The follow-up, Sky Blue Sky, nailed songs like "What Light," "Walken," "Impossible Germany," and the title track. It hit #4 on the Billboard 200.
Wilco's last release was aptly called, Wilco (The Album). Success was great, blah, blah, blah. Wilco had made it, and man was it great.
Favorite album - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It's pure bliss.
Favorite song - "Heavy Metal Drummer." It's such a tough call, but I'll take this upbeat track. Any song listed is well worth listening to.
Come back next week for #6. You won't regret it, as we step into a bluesy feel.

Tell Us How You Saved!
Let's face the facts, Bekan Insurance Group saves nearly 100% of people that walk through their door (or surf across their website) loads of cash. The thing is, people can not hear this enough. So, with this being said, we are looking for you to help tell the world how much you saved. We want to know your exact experience, right down to any details you feel necessary for sharing.
As compensation for your storytelling, we will enter you into our drawing for a FREE iPod Touch. All you have to do is be open and willing to tell us how much you saved on your insurance policy. Quite the easy task.
Seems fair right? We thought so. Leave your stories in the comments or email me at blangen@bekan.com. Thanks for your support. Hopefully you can help others save cash like yourself.

MLK Day
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is an American hero, plain and simple. His pride and courage are virtues that we can all learn from. He proudly stood up for what he believed in and even died for his cause.
Without Martin Luther King, our country would be miles behind in regards to civil rights. His contributions shall never be forgotten. Thank you Dr. King, you are truly a hero. Rest in peace.

The Top 10 (Plus 1): #8 - Pearl Jam
Honestly, I don't have to come up with a huge write-up for this band. Everyone knows them. They owned the '90s. Whether it was the media-based battle for the top grunge band out of Seattle or just their tremendous longevity, people know and love Pearl Jam. Say what you will. I often hear they are too political, or too contrived, or that they just wanted to cash in on alt-rock's success. To borrow a line from my British brothers, that is bloody ridiculous. They have succeeded for nearly 20 years now on an unbelievable drive. Enjoy them. Not many bands come around that have their impact.
Led by Eddie Vedder, who I am unabashedly in love with as a musician, Pearl Jam has been cranking out great album after great album from their debut, Ten, in 1991 all the way to their most recent release, Backspacer, which came out last year. They have been phenomenal all the way through. Additionally, Vedder is a Cubs fan who wrote and sang this song (which will be of tremendous use someday).
Because of this, I'll keep it brief with two things.
Favorite song - "Corduroy" off of Vitalogy. I could have picked about 15-20 songs, honestly, but for some reason this one always was my favorite.
Favorite album - Ten...just like nearly everyone else. It's such a remarkable album.
Come back next week for #7.

Keep Your Eyes on the Road
We're not yet a month into the bitter winter and I am publicly pining for spring. Spring brings life, and as cheesy as that may sound, it's true.
So, as I plead for winter to end early, here is an important link on some new laws on the roadways, courtesy of the great bloggers at InsWeb.
Check it out here.
And remember, keep your eyes on the road. As much as we see your smiling faces, we don't want to see you in the office filing a claim. You can always come visit, though!
And, since it's the opening line from one of my favorite Doors songs, here is "Roadhouse Blues."

Make Buying Insurance Fun
I know. I know. Purchasing insurance can be a drag. As I get older and start to realize how many dollars I have spent in my days, I think, what did I even need that for anyways?
Then of course, as soon as that thinking takes hold, something awful happens and you realize one thing. You need insurance.
Since it is imperative that you do have insurance (even by the law for your automobiles), and that we often look at buying insurance as a pain, there is only one thing left to do: make buying insurance into something you can enjoy (or at least something that does not ruin your mood).
This is our goal at Bekan Insurance Group. We look to make buying insurance different from every past experience you have had. We do not want this to be a hassle; we want it to be something that makes you happy to be saving money and getting the right coverage.
If this sounds like something that interests you, call us immediately at 800.894.8225 or email me at blangen@bekan.com. Bekan Insurance Group offers the best rates on Indiana business insurance, Indiana auto insurance and Indiana home insurance. Find the right price for yourself today.

Worst Weather
Just a simple question for you on a frigid Sunday night:
What is the worst weather you have ever been in? It can be anything. Tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, arctic cold? What is it? Leave it in the comments...

Ring in the New Year
Some news, notes and questions for you as we near our 100th post...
We've stepped into a new decade. 2010 is here. Yet, I continue to write and type 2009.
If we were to analyze musicians or bands of the decade, who would represent the 2000's? Just off the top of my head, The Beatles represent the '60s, Led Zeppelin takes the '70s, U2 for the '80s (man, did that decade disappoint), Pearl Jam takes the '90s and I'd give Radiohead the '00s, even though they did a ton of great work in the '90s, too. Leave yours in the comments and top my choices.
Not quite last, our New Year's resolutions were posted last week on the mother site. Check it out.
And finally, today is my parents' 24th wedding anniversary. Congrats to them on a loving relationship.
